Differentiated Customers and Firms
نویسندگان
چکیده
The dissertation considers the heterogenity of firms. It consists of a theoretical and an empirical part. In the theoretical part it is examined to what extent asymmetries between customers have an impact on firm behavior. In the empirical part, the author analyzes the level of heterogeneity of firm performance within industries. Chapter 1 introduces the reader into the topic of firm heterogeneity. Chapter 2 provides an overview over the recent literature on horizontal product differentiation. In Chapter 3 the Hotelling duopoly model à la d’Aspremont, Gabszewicz and Thisse (1979) is generalized with respect to the number of firms. It is shown that the number of firms has an impact on the level of product differentiation. The Principle of Maximum Differentiation valid for the duopoly does not hold for the oligoply case. In Chapter 4, the optimal investment in a new distribution technology in markets with consumer switching costs is investigated using a real option model. Chapter 5 corresponds to the empirical part of the dissertation. It is studied if there are firms within industries with a similar long-run performance (performance groups) and how much of the total variance of the firm profits are explained by these firm groups.

Service design of consumer data intermediary for competitive individual targeting
Individual targeting, a marketing strategy that firms target individual consumers with tailored offers, is currently a widespread practice. Customer data intermediaries (CDIs) have emerged recently to help firms learn their prospective customers and launch their target marketing campaigns. متن کاملShould Firms Share Information About Expensive Customers? An Equilibrium Analysis
Advances in information technology increasingly allow firms to identify expensive, high-cost customers, who are not only individually less profitable for firms but also raise the average marginal cost incurred by firms and thus impose a negative externality on inexpensive customers. Should competing firms share information that identifies such customers? The answer to this question has importan...

Reasonably, one of the best strategies to encourage customers toward these behaviors is s...
متن کاملDynamic Pricing Competition with Strategic Customers Under Vertical Product Differentiation
We consider dynamic pricing competition between two firms offering vertically differentiated products to strategic customers who are inter-temporal utility maximizers. Our model can be viewed as a competitive version of the classical model of Besanko and Winston (1990). We show that there exists a Markov perfect equilibrium (MPE) in mixed strategy in the game. Furthermore, we give a simple cond...
